Sealing of Monitorin Wells
When monitoring wells are no longer required, they will be sealed in accordance with Section 4.07. Any
monitoring well that is to be mined-through will be sealed in accordance with Section 4.07 prior to
• mining through the well.
Backfilling and Grading
The next step in the reclamation plan involves the backfilling of the portal areas, as well as other facility
areas requiring backfill. Areas requiring backfill are identified on Table 63, Overburden Redistribution.
Comparison of existing topography with the topography to be achieved after reclamation was used to
generate all volumes included in the Table. The final topography for the areas listed on Table 63,
Overburden Redistribution, is shown by the Reclamation Plan Map (Map 29). Following backfilling, all
backfilled areas will be graded. The various backfilled areas will be rough-graded to the approximate
contours shown on the Reclamation Plan Map (Map 29). Post-disturbance cross-sections for the various
disturbed areas are presented in Exhibit 20, Post-Disturbance Cross-Sections.
Redistribution of Topsoil
The next step in the reclamation plan will be the redistribution of topsoil or plant-growth media. The
topsoil, where available, or best-available plant-growth media will be redistributed by scrapers or small
end-dump trucks and spread with dozers or graders. Care will be taken to keep all unnecessary equipment
off the redistributed topsoil. The roughened condition of the backfilled material will enhance the stability
and reduce the potential for slippage of topsoil or plant-growth media.
Many of the disturbed areas associated with BTU EC's operations were previously disturbed by past
mining operations. These operations occurred prior to implementation of today's existing reclamation
regulations. As such, no topsoil was salvaged. BTU EC, in cooperation with the CDMG/CDRMS has
performed sampling programs for some of these areas to determine the best-available plant-growth media.
Results of the sampling program are presented in Exhibit 41, Overburden Analysis - SA Portal Area. In
these instances, the best-available. plant-growth media will be used to compensate for the deficiency of
salvaged topsoil.
Revegetation to Appropriate Land-Use
The final step in the reclamation plan will be revegetation of disturbed areas to an appropriate postmining
land-use. Seeding and mulching will occur in the spring or fall of the year, depending on .ground
conditions. Mulch will be secured by crimping or tacking. Each area will be seeded with the appropriate
seed mixture for its designated postmining land-use. There are three postmining land uses proposed for
the BTU EC mine site; 1) Rangeland/Wildlife; 2) Cropland; and 3) Pastureland (hayland). The specific
seed mixtures proposed for the noted postmining land-uses are presented on the following tables:
• Table 64, Seed Mixture -Rangeland/Wildlife
• Table 65, Seed Mixture -Cropland
• Table 66, Seed Mixture -Pastureland (hayland)

TR07-34 2.05-24 10/31 /07
