r
*
MEMORANDUM
TO: File
FROM: R. Lance Wade
DATE: June 6, 2011
RE: JoEllen Turner Complaint June 3, 2011
I drove around 1" and 2 nd Parks yesterday afternoon (Sunday) to personally observe any haying
U p" u1,,.3,f5 Ui.,iib' lliiili.l(,lU Uy idifiiciS Nditfiin, or Ifl the vi%iriIL of, tiie N ew Horizon Mine Permit Area.
My observation was that not a single farmer had yet cut hay or cut off the water from their fields. In
general, it takes about two to three days for the ground to dry enough to cut hay after the water is
turned off, so the fact that no farmers have taken this step indicates to me that these farmers not only
did not intend to cut hay during the month of May, but do not intend to take their first cut until a period
of days or weeks, or more, from the present date. No hay is down in either park anywhere and will not
be for at least several days if everyone is still irrigating.
I observed the following status on the following properties, identified by landowner: Morgan — irrigating,
Richards — irrigating, Staats — irrigating, Smith — irrigating, Watson — irrigating, Tomlinson — irrigating,
Glasier I" Park — irrigating, Beiswanger — irrigating, Carver — irrigating, Naslund — irrigating, Chiles —
irrigating, Garvey— irrigating, Weimer— irrigating, Cooper— irrigating.
There was ice under the sprinklers on the mornings of Tuesday May 31 and Friday June 3, hay doesn't
grow well when it's that cool. Should pick up now that temps are 50's — 60's at night.
It is my recollection that last year we were specifically directed by DRMS (Sandy Brown and Dan
Matthews) not to conduct any revegetation sampling until after June 15, 2010. This was a factor in our
scheduling of revegetation sampling in the current year.
{00053907.1 }
