DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WATER RESOURCES
RECEIVED
June 10, 2011 "UN 15 ZDl /
DIVIII011i of Reclamation,
tiMr. Berhan Keffelew
Environmental Protection Specialist III
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver Colorado 80203
Re:6-1977-144, Colorado Quarries Mica Load
Dear Mr. Keffelew:
John W. Hickenlooper
Governor
Mike King
Executive Director
Dick Wolfe, P.E.
Director \ State Engineer
Steven J. Witte, P.E.
Division Engineer
This letter is in respo se to your inquiry of this office as to the status of any determination as to
whether or not any open water surface areas related to the Colorado Quarries Mica Load pit
require augmentation pursuant to C.R.S. 37-90-137(11).
Colorado Quarries did contact this office during the past winter seeking confirmation from us as to
whether or not their above quarry pit had exposed groundwater prior to 1981 and whether or not
the surface area of any water surface had changed in size since that date. Following this request,
I reviewed photos submitted by Colorado Quarries on this issue, aerial photography that this office
had available and also contacted the local NRCS office in Canon City. This information confirmed
to me that an exposed water surface area did exist prior to 1981 at this quarry site and that the
water surface area, although somewhat changed in geometry, has not measurably changed in
overall size since that time.
0 ?) , '-, ?
Steven J.
