DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WATER RESOURCES
June 2, 2011
John W. The Notice of Intent
serves as a request to convert 10 of 25 exploration drill holes into monitoring wells by installing small
vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) during exploration hole abandonment. The Hanson Uranium Project
is located in the Tallahassee area of Fremont County, northwest of Canon City.
According to the April 22, 2011 Technical Memorandum from Ben Vallerine of Black Range Minerals, the
VWPs will be attached to a 1.5-inch diameter sacrificial grout pipe which will be lowered into place using
the drilling rig. The VWPs, associated grout pipe, and borehole will then be completely backfilled with a
cement-bentonite grout mixture, which will permanently encapsulate the VWPs in the hole. Based on
the description of the VWP installation/exploration hole abandonment, this office will not require the
applicant to obtain monitoring well permits for the aforementioned activity.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this application. If you have any further questions
regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me directly at this office or contact the local Water
Commissioner. The Water Commissioner for District 12 is Brian Sutton, who may be contacted at (719)
269-2800 or via email at Brian.Sutton@state.co.us.
Sincerely,
Caleb Foy, .I.T.
Water Resources Engineer
cc: Steve Witte, Division 2 Engineer (via email)
Brian Sutton, District 12 Water Commissioner (via email)
CRF: HansonUraniumProject_p2009O25_PiezometerMonitoring.docx
Office of the State Engineer
1313 Sherman Street, Suite 818 • Denver, CO 80203 • Phone: 303-866-3581 • Fax: 303-866-3589
www.watenstate.co.us
