Ranching for Wildlife Area. . CDOW would like to work with Colowyo to further identify potential grazing
management options that may benefit sage grouse.
MULE DEER AND ELK
CDOW is supportive of Colowyo's recommendation to light the haul road and reduce speed limits during critical
migration and wintering periods (November through May) as an alternative to a continuous fence and multiple
underpasses. CDOW encourages Colowyo to consider a widened shoulder along the haul road to be maintained
free of tall vegetation to enhance driver visibility in an attempt to minimize wildlife/vehicle collisions. CDOW
assumes this widended shoulder could still be bermed in a similar fashion to a standard shoulder.
VEGETATION PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Based upon further discussion internally and with CDRMS, CDOW still recommends Colowyo's reclamation
efforts target 500 stems/acre on targeted sage brush steppe core areas and 375 stems/acre in ecotonal areas.
CDOW believes this is achievable with the variable topsoil plan and recommended seeding mix.
CDOW also places a high value on tall shrub habitat for all species but specifically sharp-tailed grouse and big
game reproductive areas. CDOW is concerned that the continued loss of this specific habitat with no concrete
plan for stand replacement will begin to have noticeable impacts on wildlife in the Danforth Hills.
CDOW also recognizes Colowyo's reluctance to commit to 150 acres of tall shrub establishment and sympathizes
with this concern given the ten year bond release deadline. With that in mind, CDOW proposes an alternative to a
single 150 acre enclosure being multiple small scale enclosed shrub plots at a density of approximately five per
acre randomly scattered across 150 acres. Each plot would be approximately 36 square feet and planted with
individual tublings. Simple snow fence and/or hydration mats could be incorporated to enhance soil moisture and
tubling survival.
As always, CDOW appreciated the long term cooperative partnership shared with Colowyo regarding wildlife
habitat preservation. We are confident this long standing partnership will result in a plan acceptable to all as it
relates to the proposed Collom Expansion. Please feel free to contact District Wildlife Manager Jon Wangnild at
970-878-6067 for further discussions.
