PERMIT #: M-2011-021
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: JLE
INSPECTION DATE: May 17, 2011
OBSERVATIONS
This was a pre-operation inspection of the J & P Trucking Pit #1; DRMS File No. M-2011-021. This site is
located approximately 22 miles south of Walsh, Colorado in Baca County. I, Jared Ebert of the Colorado
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety conducted the inspection. Jeff and Patricia Chenoweth
accompanied me on the inspection.
The proposed permit area is 155.2 acres. The topography of the area consists of rolling hills covered with
native grass, shrubs and yucca plants. The site will be mined in four phases located on the ridge tops found at
the site. Phase 1 of the operation will begin at the western end of a historic gravel pit depicted on the mining
plan maps submitted in the application. This pit has naturally reclaimed itself and it blends in with the
surrounding area. The vegetation is not as dense in the pit area as the un-mined land. However, there were
no steep slopes remaining in this area, only gentle hills.
The access road into the site is located along the eastern edge of the permit area. According to Mr.
Chenoweth, this road will be slightly improved not only for the gravel pit operation but also for the landowner
to access the land. There are several permanent man-made structures found at the site that will be within 200
feet of the affected land. These structures consist of barbed wire fences along the eastern and northern
boundary, County Road G, and a buried water line. Also, a gate is in the process of being installed along the
eastern boundary from for the access road.
No problems were noted during the inspection.
