Kaldenbach, Tom
Cs'F?o 007
Yyd"w ?03 3
From: Welt, Kathy [KWelt@archcoal.com] /VPD
Sent: Thursday, May 26, 2011 10:02 AM
To: Kaldenbach, Tom
Cc: Nolte, Doug; Sweetwood, Ryan
Subject: WQCD Follow-up
Tom,
Just to follow-up my phone message to you, Ryan called Kelly Morgan at the WQCD this morning to self-report
that the pH of the stormwater discharge from pond SG-1 yesterday was just over the daily maximum pH limit,
and that the pond outlet was then closed. Ryan also let her know that Sylvester Gulch was flowing high after
recent storms and that the pH in the stream below the discharge point was 8.3, indicating no impact to the
stream. She told him that considering that the pond is not discharged very often and that the historic mean
pH of 8.8 is already close to the upper limit, that she would look into an alternate pH limit and adding a
treatment option like alum.
Cathy Welt,
Environmental Engineer III
Mountain Coal Company, LLC
West Elk Mine
P.O.
