Mr. Adams
Page 1 2
June 1, 2011
2. The Applicant is currently monitoring groundwater in 10 piezometers, several of which are
situated in the center of the pit. The Applicant has indicated that the 10 piezometers will
continue to be monitored, but the trigger point would not apply to all of them. Please indicate
which piezometers the trigger level will be applied to.
Typically the trigger point is based off of three consecutive months of variation from baseline
data. Please commit to notifying the Division in writing within 48 hours in the event any of
the monitoring wells exceed the lower baseline levels by 24 inches for three consecutive
months. In the event the trigger point is reached, the Division may require the Operator to
increase the frequency of groundwater monitoring.
4. The Applicant must have a mitigation plan for protection of wells in place prior to approval
of the Reclamation Permit. Please provide a mitigation plan to be implemented in the event
that the mining operation impacts adjacent wells users. Mitigation measures may include, but
are not limited to:
a) Provide a water tank and deliver water as necessary
b) Clean a well to improve efficiency
c) Replacing the impacted well with a new well
d) Providing groundwater injection/recharge to eliminate or reduce off-site impacts
5. The Applicant has been monitoring groundwater levels on a monthly basis, please commit to
continue to monitor at this frequency and to submit groundwater data with the Annual
Report.
6. The majority of the wells immediately south of the permit area have been completed in the
shallow alluvial aquifer. As such, there is minimal storage capacity to buffer the effects of
dewatering. At present there are no monitoring wells located on the southern permit
boundary. In order to monitor impacts to the wells, the Division believes additional
monitoring wells should be added to the southern permit boundary. Please respond.
As previously mentioned, if you are unable to provide satisfactory responses to any inadequacies
prior to June 16, 2011, it will be your responsibility to request an extension of time to allow
for continued review of this application. If there are still unresolved issues when the decision
date arrives and no extension has been requested, the application will be denied.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (303)866-3567 x8116.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Cunningham
Environmental Protection Specialist
CC: Brad Janes, Varra Companies, Inc.
