Binns, Janet
From: savageandsavage@earthlink.net
Sent: Wednesday, May 18, 2011 7:03 AM
To: Binns, Janet
Cc: Kaldenbach, Tom; RSweetwood@archcoal.com
Subject: Draft proposal for 2011 vegetation sampling protocol at West Elk Mine
Attachments: 2011 West Elk Mine Phase II and Phase III Sampling Protocol.doc
Hi Janet,
Savage and Savage has been awarded the contract to conduct Phase II and III sampling at the West Elk Mine in support
of bond release. As we discussed last year, the areas to be sampled predominantly include former well drill sites and
road segments, varying in size from 0.1 to -15 acres. I have appended a protocol for the sampling and would like your
concurrence and/or suggestions for revision (especially with respect to your experience with woody plant sampling in
small areas). We anticipate the start of sampling to be --June 6, beginning at lower elevations and proceeding up in
elevation as the vegetation matures, with sampling ending at the end of June. Again, as we discussed, I will be selecting
sample points by including all potential sample areas in a sample universe, gridding the total area and randomly selecting
sample points that include the sample areas. I also anticipate ranking or stratifying the sample sites by size, such that the
larger areas receive a proportionately higher chance of more than one sample point.
Please e-mail or call with any questions or suggestions. Thanks,
Mike Savage
970.674.8080
savageandsavage(cD-earthlink.net
