Probable Hydrologic Consequences New Elk Mine 9
for the CDWR wells summarized in Table 4 are shown on Plate 3. Alluvial water levels are also monitored
by the New Elk Mine in four wells near the West Portal Shaft (PAW -1, PAW -2, PAW -3 and PAW -4). The
observed depths to water range from about 7 to 34 feet (New Elk Coal Company [NECC], 2009). Seasonal
water level fluctuations are mostly on the order of I to 2 feet (Figure 4).
PAW -1 PAW -2
+o w
6 6
o fi e t3
PAW -8 t PAW -9
3
a s ' ° a 16 .` I II - - •y ,..
$ ii 1 ✓
4
Figure 4. Depth to Water in Purgatoire Valley Alluvium near East Portal Shaft
Well yields for the alluvial aquifer are typically 5 to 15 gpm (Table 4). The highest reported yield is 25
gpm for the domestic well owned by George Chaves. The Chaves well is located east of the permit
boundary new the town of Stonewall. Hydraulic conductivity data for alluvium is available from single
well tests (8) performed by WWL (1980). WWL reported that the hydraulic conductivity of alluvium
generally ranges from 0.014 ft/day to 2 0/day. One test, however, returned a value of 1,880 ft/day.
Water quality data (2001 to 2008) for alluvium adjacent to the Purgatoire River are available from annual
monitoring reports prepared for the New Elk Mine and are summarized in Table 5 (Picketwire Processing
2002-2007; New Elk Coal Company, 2008 and 2009). Well PAW -1 is located upstream of mining
facilities, and monitors water quality unaffected by significant mining. PAW -2, PAW -8, and PAW -9 are
located downstream of mining facilities. PAW -2 monitors water quality down gradient from the DWDA,
well PAW -8 is down gradient of the RDA, and PAW -9 monitors the overall effects of New Elk mining
activities on alluvial groundwater.
4164A,110421 Whetstone Attociater 6
TD 44 F-r.:6ir PrA\ 0— 1 In 3 nn 13
