II
V. Safety and Pollution Control
a) Fire
The area around drilling operations will be prepared by grading and leveling a
drill site about one-quarter acre in size, sufficient for drilling operations and a pit
of sufficient size to contain the cuttings from the drill hole. All vegetation and
topsoil removed from the drill site before operations commence will be stockpiled
and re-applied over the surface during reclamation to help promote vegetation
regeneration. This drill site size will allow for drilling operations to be conducted
within an area that has a periphery of bare earth between the drilling and support
equipment and adjacent vegetation. Drilling and support equipment will have
approved fire suppression equipment, and the drilling crews will be trained in its
use.
b) Soil Erosion
The drill site will be graded with a shallow slope towards the pit excavated for the
containment of drill cuttings so that any soil eroded from the drill site will be
contained on-site. Water bars will be constructed on drill roads to minimize soil
erosion, and approved culverts will be used where drill roads cross gulleys or
stream drainages.
C) Pollution of Surface and Ground Water.
Diesel fuel for the drilling rig and support equipment will be stored in approved
tanks positioned in shallow pits lined with impermeable plastic so that any spills
will be contained. These pits will be of sufficient volume to contain the entire
contents of the tank should a full tank rupture. Drilling mud will be stored in
tanks positioned above plastic lined enclosures that are sloped to drain into the
plastic-lined pit for containment of drilling cuttings. Diesel-based drilling mud
will be re-circulated from tanks within a lined pit so that any spills will be
contained. The diesel-based mud system will be fully contained, and diesel mud
and diesel-contaminated cuttings will be hauled off-site for proper disposal.
d) Air Pollution
No refuse or garbage will be disposed of by burning; all such material will be
hauled away for disposal in established waste disposal sites.
e) Protection of Fish and Wildlife
Drilling operations will be conducted at sufficient distance from fish habitat that
containment of fuel or drilling mud spills is ensured, and will not impact fish
populations. The plastic-lined pit for containment of drilling cuttings will be
fenced to prevent wildlife from entry.
f) Hazards to public health and safety
The public will be warned of the dangers of equipment and drilling operations by
adequate signage. Where possible drill roads or drill sites will be gated or
chained to prevent public access. No firearms will be allowed on the exploration
