Shell Exploration & Production
Mr. Travis Marshall
Mr. David Bird
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver CO 80203
May 11, 2011
Shell Exploration &
Production Company
3737 Bellaire Boulevard
Houston, Texas 77025, U.S.A.
P.O. Box 481
Houston, Texas 77001-0481,
U.S.A.
Internet
http://www.shell.com/ep
Subject: Response to Comments, NOI # P-2010-026, Shell Multi-Mineral RDD
Lease
Dear Mr. Marshall and Mr. Bird,
Thank you for your questions and comments on Shell's Notice of Intent to
Conduct Prospecting on the East RDD Lease, also called the Multi-Mineral
Lease. This letter responds to your comments, and provides new
information regarding a change in the surface location of several drill
holes.
• New surface locations of well heads:
In the previously-submitted materials which you reviewed, Shell proposed
to directionally drill 13 heater wells, 6 observer wells, and 2 producer
wells. This much of the plan has not changed; all wells still will be
drilled directionally, and the well locations, at depth, remain the same
as proposed in Shell's existing submittal. However, for drilling safety
and ease of access we have elected to spread out the surface drill pattern
slightly and drill several of the wells as deviated wells (See Figure 2,
attached). That is, wells will be drilled vertically from surface to
below surface casing (-300 ft), then deviated to the location previously
proposed, then drilled vertically to TD. The lower portion of the wells
will be vertical from just above the dissolution surface (1900 ft depth)
to TD.
The attached map shows the locations of each well at depth (solid circles)
and the location of each well head at surface (open circles) (Figure 2).
Wells that are to be drilled vertically from surface to TD are shown in
solid circles. Wells within a one mile radius of the RDD can be found on
the attached map (Figure 1).
The wellhead layout forms an approximate H-shaped pattern. This surface
pattern will more easily accommodate drilling, logging, and work overs,
and provides a greater measure of safety for drilling, operations, and
work overs if/as needed.
•
