We received your letter on May 4, 2011, and you
provided additional information about this project by telephone on May 9, 2011.
The State of Colorado, Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety, is currently reviewing an
application to renew an existing permit for coal mining at the Keenesburg Strip Mine. Coors
Energy Company seeks to continue ash disposal and reclamation operations at the mine. Coors
Energy Company proposes no additional surface disturbance with this renewal application.
Your letter requests comments as the State of Colorado reviews the Coors Energy Company's
permit renewal application. In response to your request, the Service prepares this letter under the
authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA), as amended (16 U.S.C. § 1531 et seq.).
At this time, the Service has no comments regarding a renewed permit for ongoing mining at the
Keenesburg Strip Mine. Renewed activities involve no'new ground disturbance at a previously
disturbed mine surrounded by previously disturbed ground and oil wells.
We appreciate the opportunity to comment on the permit renewal for the Keenesburg Strip Mine.
If the Service can be of any additional assistance, please contact Craig Hansen of the Colorado
Field Office at (303) 236-4749. Thank you for your concern for natural resources.
Sincerely,
Susan C. Linner
Colorado Field Supervisor
cc: USFWS, Craig Hansen
