The seepwater return line associated with the issue is
listed as an environmental protection facility. An undetermined volume of process water was observed
running down a hillside where surface flow normally does not occur. Initial assessments were that the
seepwater return line had developed a leak. To confirm, operators shut the pumps serving the line down
and confirmed that it was, in fact, the seepwater return line. This leak appeared very close to where the
line ultimately discharges.
(a) After discovering the issue, Henderson employees determined that the flow was coming
from the seepwater return line and promptly shut the associated pumps down. After
turning the pumps off, the flow promptly subsided. Tailing personnel wrapped the piping
with a bitumen coating, which allowed for the pumps to be temporarily turned back on
until a permanent fix could be implemented.
(b) Henderson is confident that the process water flow will not adversely impact human
health, property or the environment. This is based on the fact that all of the process
water coming from the pipe flowed directly into the tailing impoundment, where it was
originally designed to flow.
(c) The operator contact person for this event is:
Tim Haynes
• 19302 County Road 3, Parshall, CO 80468
0 phone: 303-569-3221 ext. 2284
• fax: 970-725-0038
(d) No monitoring or analyses were performed for this situation.
