Since the water is alkaline, the pH is above 7, but rarely exceeding 8.4. Concentrations of heavy
metals rarely exceed health limits, as stated in the USGS report. This has also been backed up by
the shallow ground water monitoring performed since the Colowyo Mine began operation.
Conclusions
The Colowyo Mine has no single or multiple continuous geologic units in the mine that contains
ground water under unconfined or confined conditions. The only ground water encountered is the
discontinuous perched pockets of ground water. This lack of ground water, except for
discontinuous perched ground water pockets, encountered during mining precludes the necessity
to monitor ground water on a ridge top.
4.05.13 Surface and Groundwater Monitoring
The current monitoring program is summarized by the following sites:
Sedimentation Ponds - Monitoring is in accordance with the requirements of CSPS Discharge Permit CO-
0045161.
Surface Water - Three surface water sites are monitored.
1 New Upper Goodspring Creek (NUGSC) represents the upstream, undisturbed or background
condition.
2 Lower Goodspring Creek (LGSC) represents the downstream condition found below mining
activities.
3 Taylor Creek represents the downstream condition found below the Gossard Loadout and
mining activities.
Groundwater - Three groundwater sites are monitored.
1 A -6 Well - Located in the Goodspring creek alluvium, this site represents the updip, undisturbed
or background condition.
2 North Goodspring Well - Located in the Goodspring Creek Alluvium, this site represents the
downdip condition below mining activities.
3 Gossard Well - Located within the rail loop, this site represents the condition of groundwaters
associated with the Gossard Coal Loadout Facility.
The evolution of the Surface and Groundwater Monitoring Plan is as follows:
• In a letter to the Division dated May 2, 1983 Colowyo submitted the surface and groundwater
monitoring plan, which was subsequently approved by the Division on May 6, 1983. A copy of
the letter is enclosed on pages 4.05 -11 through 4.05 -14.
• Page 4.05 -15 further - explains changes to the Surface and Groundwater Monitoring Plan.
• Exhibit 18, Revisions for Second Five -Year Term, shows a Minor Revision, "Modification of
Groundwater Monitoring ", approved August 1989.
• Exhibit 7, Hydrology Information, details the "Modification of both Surface Water Monitoring
and Alluvial Groundwater Monitoring Locations, 1991 ".
Rule 4 Performance Standards 4.05 -10 Revision Date: 2/01/11
Revision No.: TR -87
