King Coal Mine is an underground
coal mining operation located approximately 7 miles southwest of Hesperus, CO.
No information was provided in the application materials concerning the estimated water demand and
proposed water supply for operations at the mine. This office recommends that DRMS require the
applicant to outline, in detail, the estimated water demand of operations at the mine in addition to the
water supply proposed to meet such demands. Such information is imperative in determining whether
operation of the mine will impact or cause injury to vested water rights.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this application. If you have any further questions
regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me directly at this office or contact the local Water
Commissioner. The Water Commissioner for District 33 is Matt Schmitt, who may be contacted at (970)
749-7913 or via email at Matthew.Schmitt@state.co.us.
Sincerely,
Caleb Fo , E.I.T.
Water Resources Engineer
cc: Rege Leach, Division 7 Engineer (via email)
Matt Schmitt, District 33 Water Commissioner (via email)
CRF: KingCoalMine_C1981035_TR18.docx
Office of the State Engineer
1313 Sherman Street, Suite 818 • Denver, CO 80203 • Phone: 303-866-3581 • Fax: 303-866-3589
http://water.state.co.us
