Project Understanding
The Applicant plans to extract ore from May Day Mine Levels 1 and 2 and process the ore at May Day
Level 1. The milling process uses chemicals and water to leach the metal from the ore. The applicant
proposed that a majority of process water would be recycled. Tailings waste is proposed to be solidified and
buried back in the mined areas from which they were extracted, assuming these areas can be demonstrated
to be dry.
Access is proposed via a private road on an adjacent landowner's parcel (i.e.: the unpermitted access road),
to the La Plata River bridge crossing, and then up a historic mine access road. It is understood the
unpermitted road has grades of 12-15% and the historic mine access road has grades of greater than 15%.
The project is proposed to be supported by 20-25 employees who will access the site via the aforementioned
roads.
Traffic to the mine has not been addressed but can be anticipated to potentially include 20-25 employees,
periodic service vehicles (e.g. portable toilet pumping, chemical delivery, etc), and periodic construction
vehicles (e.g. concrete).
The "Operational Area" site plan figure shows secondary access as being proposed. This access crosses
United States Forest Service (USFS) land.
Fort Lewis Mesa Fire District (FLMFD) provides emergency service in the project area. Significant road
improvements would be needed for FLMFD to access the site.
Sanitary service is proposed as porta-potties. Potable water for employees has not been proposed.
PLANNING DEPARTMENT • 970.382.6263. • 1060 E. 2ND AvE. • DURANGO, COLORADO • 81301
