Limited-Results Archaeological Survey Form (Page 3 of 6)
IV. ENVIRONMENT (continued)
19. Flora: There is little native vegetation in the immediate project area; it consists of a cow pasture
with low grasses. There is some scattered low sagebrush, especially on the parcel's north side
near the creek.
20. Soils/Geology: Surface sediments are predominantly alluvial in nature and consist of a medium
brown sandy loam with some larger quartzite and basalt cobbles. Subsurface geology is
composed of sandstone, shale and major coal beds of the Williams Fork Formation which are
sedimentary and igneous rocks from the Early Tertiary and Late Cretaceous Age (Tweto 1979).
21. Ground Visibility: Surface visibility was about 80%, and was somewhat limited due to patchy
snow cover. The sparse vegetation cover, however, allowed for good ground visibility otherwise.
22. Comments: There were several opportunities along the creek bed to view exposed sands and
contents via cut banks and eroded areas.
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of File Search: OAHP- Compass online database
Dates: 04/15/2011
24. Previous Survey Activity - In the project area: No previous inventories have covered the current
proposed borehole pad, though numerous surveys have been conducted in the close vicinity.
In the general region: Within all of Section 23, TSN, R87W of the project area, ten cultural
resource inventories have been previously conducted (see Table 1).
25. Known Cultural Resources - In the project area: There are no previously recorded
archaeological sites in the 8 acre survey parcel, however there are numerous sites in the
adjacent areas (see Table 2). General Land Office Maps dating to 1878 and 1914 were also
consulted, and they do not depict any historic features in the immediate project area.
In the general region (summarize): Eleven previously recorded isolated finds and eight
archaeological sites are located within Section 23, TSN, R87W within a mile or less from the
current project's survey parcel (see Table 2). Two of these sites are historic and seven are
prehistoric. Thirteen of these sites have been recommended not NRHP eligible, three are
recommended NRHP eligible, and three are needs data.
