Governor dedicates
first ski trails
Colorado Governor John love
spent yesterday afternoon tour-
ing tile. new ski area being devel-
oped three miles southwest of
this old mining town, with Emile
Allais, 1937438 World Champion
Alpine Skier who had laid out
the area's trails.
Accompanied by his wife and
son, the governor was here at tine
invitation of Joseph T. Zoline,
developer of the area.
Zoline used the opportunity of
the governor's visit to name one
of the new area's runs in his
honor, calling it "First Love," and
marking it with it sign made by a
local designer. One of the area's
most challenging expert trails
was simultaneous baptized
"Allais Allev" in honor of the
Frenchman who developed the
parallel method of skiing.
/77rcre'; nothing nera about
slidr_c in Bear Creek, but it Was
interesting reading about it
jinn t 110 years ago./
A slide came down across the
trail up Bear Creek yesterdaV
resulting in the death of one
man. Three Austrians had start-
ed up to the Thomas Mine to go
to work, and it appears, were
crosshrg the track of a slide that
had come down a short time
before. It seems that the tail end
of the slide had failed to break,
and when the men were crossing
it cane loose and caught them.
The slide ran in a narrow path
until it reached the men, when it
scattered and caught all three.
Tony Leonardelli received the
full force of the avalanche, but
tine other two were carried about
G9 feet and thrown to one side.
The spot where the slide came
down is it particularly dangerous
place, and the snow ruffs quite
frequently. It is probable that
the men did not realize the dan-
ger of the newly fallen snow,
inasmuch ms a slide had run a
short time before. The searching
party stopped work a few feet
from where the body was found
this morning, but had the man
been found immediately, it is
doubtful whether or not there
would have been any life in hint,
as he was Smothered.
The book's mentions of
Ile was deeply disappointed
by the outcome, he said, and left
shortly after, quickly becoming
inure involved in the world of
And today, lie sees the Posi-
