INTRODUCTION <br />The proposed Craig Ranch Pit is located approximately 1 mile southwest of Whitewater in Mesa <br />County, Colorado. The site is bordered on the south and west by Bureau of Land Management, <br />the Gunnison River and a gravel pit to the north, and private land owned by John Schwartz and <br />BD Interests to the east. 8.40 acres of the site is currently permitted as a sandstone quarry. <br />Oldcastle SW Group, Inc., dba United Companies of Mesa County has taken over the permit <br />from the previous operator. The permit number for this operation is M-1986-002 and is called the <br />Whitewater Quarry. as part of this conversion application, the name of the operation will become <br />the Craig Ranch Pit and will have a permit acreage of 153.04 acres. The surrounding landowners <br />are shown on Map C-1 and the mailing addresses of those landowners are listed in Exhibit R. <br />Topography of the site slopes toward the north to the Gunnison River. A portion of the site has <br />been disturbed by past gravel activity and is currently being reclaimed. United companies takes <br />responsibility for all disturbances within the Craig Ranch Permit Area and will release the <br />previous operator of the reclamation liability. Within the permit area, there will be 27.27 acres <br />that are not disturbed and 125.77 acres that will be disturbed. The resulting permit area will be <br />153.04 acres. The undisturbed portions of the permit allow for the permit boundary to be <br />primarily the property boundary. The portions of the permit area that will not be mined are the <br />steep drainages and a buffer around the entire site. <br />The permittee for this site is Oldcastle SW Group, Inc., dba United Companies of Mesa County. <br />Throughout this application, the name has been shortened to United Companies. <br />The site will be reclaimed to a land use of rangeland which will consist of revegetated areas and <br />sandstone. The topography of the reclaimed land is shown on Map F. <br />The estimated production for the site is 75,000 tons per year. The actual production per year will <br />depend on market demand in the area and if construction material corn from this pit for large <br />construction projects. The gravel thickness is variable and ranges from 0-29 feet and overburden <br />is expected to vary between 0-9 feet. <br />Craig Ranch Pit, March 2011 i-1
