The Climax Mine, and ancillary
facilities, presently consists of approximately 33.1 square miles located at the headwaters of
Tenmile Creek and the East Fork of the Eagle River. See, Exhibit 1. As used herein, the term
"Climax Mine" includes said property and ancillary facilities, including the mill and the
underground mine workings at the Climax Mine. Molybdenum ore, which has historically been
used primarily to strengthen steel, is mined and milled at the Climax Mine. Until relatively
recently, the Climax Mine was the only significant source of molybdenum in the world.
Molybdenum mining began at the Climax Mine in 1917, triggered by Word War I and the
manufacture of armaments for that conflict. In 1932, the demand for molybdenum increased
dramatically, in large measure due to the manufacture of armaments in anticipation of World
56642. WPD:5
