Fall 2010 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Box Canyon, Apache Rocks, and South of Divide Mining Areas
Figure 2. Fall 2009 northeastward view across the MDW E1-48 drill pad.
is
3.3 Traverse J-J'
Traverse J-J' begins at Traverse I-I' and continues in a west/northwestward direction along a
ridgeline across most of mined E-seam Longwall Panel E1 (and a small portion of E-seam
Longwall Panel E2) to numerous MDW drill pads (see Maps 2 and 4). Overburden depths along
this traverse vary from 1,350 to 1,450 feet over the B-seam and 1,050 to 1,250 feet over the E-
seam.
This traverse is generally flat and stable on soil and colluvium derived from the Wasatch
Formation and from intrusive rocks of the West Elk Mountains overlying consolidated bedrock
units of the Barren Member of the Mesaverde Formation. Numerous MDW drill pads are
accessible from this traverse including E I-15, E I-19, E I-26.5, E 1-3 0.5, E I-34, E 1-3 8, E2-38,
E I -42, E2-42, E2-44.5, E I-45, and E247.5. Each of these sites was visited during the fall 2010
field activities. Mining had already occurred beneath each of these MDW pads. Cracks were
observed in only one of these MDW pads (E1-19) and is therefore included for specific
discussion as Location 2. This location is one of the westernmost MDW pads along this traverse.
831-032.792 Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
April 2011
Page 8
