respectively, of the project area. The Foidel Creek Mine is a large ongoing underground coal
mine immediately to the southeast of the project area.
Cultural or Archaeological Resources - Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC)
has conducted cultural/archaeological resource surveys of the project area outside of the
Yoast Mine permit boundary. The cultural resource surveys were completed during 2007,
2008 and 2010. The survey area for site CCU025 is included in the report titled "2008 Core
Hole Project and Shaft Location " (1211712007): survey area for sites CCU064, 065 and 070
in report "Peabody Energy Twentymile Coal Company Sage Creek Subsidence Project: A
Class III Cultural Resources Inventory, Routt County, Colorado " (February 27, 2009): and
site CCU069 in report "Peabody Energy, Twentymile Coal Company: Sage Creek Drill Site
(CCU069), Class III Cultural Resources Inventory, Routt County, Colorado" (1211612010).
The cultural/archeological resource survey reports are provided in Appendix C, Cultural
Resources Investigations. No archaeological sites or isolated fords were indentified.
Previous surveys have identified several isolated fords and historic/prehistoric sites in the
general region. MAC findings were "no effect on historic properties" and recommends no
additional, cultural resources work for these sites.
The areas inside the Yoast permit boundary (sites CCU071, 072, 073 and 074) were
surveyed prior to surface disturbance - i.e. removal of topsoil for construction of facilities
and mining. The cultural survey reports are contained in the Yoast permit #C-94-084.
5) Describe Exploration Activities
The primary methods of exploration and geologic and chemical data collection proposed in
this application include exploration drilling, geophysical logging, and sampling, followed by
reclamation of all exploration disturbances, as more specifically described in the following
sections.
The 2011 exploration program involves eight (8) exploration drillholes to further delineate
and characterize geologic conditions, coal seam occurrence and quality, and overburden
physical and chemical characteristics; and one (1) additional drillhole (CCU069) to verify the
presence or absence of water in old underground workings to the north of RCR 27A. The
drillhole (CCU069) is not expected to be converted monitor well.
Each of the proposed 2011 drill-sites are shown on Map 1, 2011 Surface Ownership, and
listed in Table 1, 2011 Drillhole Location and Ownership.
Scheduled Timing - PSCM plans to initiate exploration activities immediately upon receipt
of required approvals, and continue as weather and ground conditions allow. It is anticipated
that drilling activities will be completed by the end of 2011, although weather or other
unanticipated delays may result in extension of the activities into 2012. The drilling
operations will be scheduled on a 12-hour per day basis (approximately 7:00am to 7:00pm);
however, PSCM requests permission to conduct operations on a 24-hour per day basis if
unforeseen delays cause the project to fall behind schedule. In the event of winter drilling
activities, PSCM will coordinate with the CDOW to keep specific gates locked to preclude
public access, and to avoid areas of critical winter range.
PSCM 2011 NOI 13 April 2010
