Permit Amendment (AM-06) - Climax Mine
CM0000490
the principal EPFs in the Tenmile Creek Drainage. This system discharges treated water meeting the
conditions and standards of the CDPS Permit at Outfall 001 located near the property line. Under the
CDPS permit discussed in Section T-2.2, discharge of water from the site, including process water and
impacted waters are required to meet discharge water quality limits. Contaminants that might be released
from the potential sources discussed in Section T-5.3.1 would be captured within the Tenmile Creek
watershed above or at the Mayflower TSF where water is treated prior to discharge. Individual EPFs,
which are part of the water treatment system, are discussed in subsequent sections along with EPFs that
are present in other areas of potential contamination above the water discharge outfall.
Existing EPFs
In the portion of the Tenmile Creek watershed affected by Climax Mine operations, the following existing
controls are considered EPFs:
¦ EPFs for Water Treatment Chemicals;
¦ New TDL;
¦ ETDL;
Robinson TSF and 2 Dam;
¦ Tenmile TSF and 3 Dam;
¦ Mayflower TSF and 5 Dam; and
¦ 5 Dam Seepwater Collection and Return System.
Potential Future EPFs
In the portion of the Tenmile Creek watershed affected by Climax Mine operations, the following potential
future controls are considered EPFs in addition to those previously mentioned:
¦ EPFs for Designated Chemicals for Concentrate Production;
¦ McNulty Seepage Collection System;
¦ North 40 Seepage Collection System; and
¦ PDWTP.
As the need for these facilities is confirmed and design details are developed, submittals will be made to
DRMS as necessary.
EPFs for Water Treatment Chemicals: As discussed, various source waters are treated by lime
precipitation to raise the pH and precipitate metal hydroxides. Precipitates (treatment sludges) are
primarily contained within the sludge cell on the Tenmile TSF. Additional precipitation and settling occurs
in the Tenmile and Mayflower TSFs. Prior to discharge to Tenmile Creek, a sulfuric acid drip is employed
to reduce the final pH into the range stipulated by the CDPS Permit.
Lime: Slaked lime is currently produced at the Lime Station. The lime station includes conventional silos
for storage of lime prior to slaking and lime slakers. Slaked lime is produced by mixing lime from the silos
with fresh water from Buffehrs Lake and/or the McNulty Well. Slaked lime is then piped to the SDP and
also to the 3 Dam Pump Station located between Tenmile TSF and Mayflower TSF.
Sulfuric Acid: Sulfuric acid is incorporated into the water treatment system to lower the pH of
discharged water to within the range of pH 6.5-9.0. Sulfuric acid is stored in a 7,000 gallon carbon steel
tank at the Mayflower Pump Station. The tank is located within an epoxy lined concrete sump designed
to contain 120 percent of tank capacity.
GreatFloc 5500: GreatFloc 5500 is received in bags and put into solution onsite. The liquid solution is
stored in a 2,000 gallon mix tank and a 3,500 gallon feed/storage tank. These tanks are located within
secondary containment inside the SDP
Exhibit T T-18 May 2010
