R
ECEIVED .SUN 1 4 2410
United States Forest Paonia P.O. Box 1030
USDA Department of Service Ranger District N Rio Grande Ave.
Agriculture PHONE NO. 970 -527 -4131 Paonia, CO 81428
FAX 970 -527 -4151
File Code: 2820 -4
Date: June 9, 2010
Joe Dudash
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Rm 215
Denver, CO 80203
Dear
The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest (GMUG) has completed its review of
Oxbow Mining's TR -65. In TR -65, twelve (12) gob ventilation boreholes and about 2.2 miles of temporary
road would be constructed on National Forest (NF) Lands.
As a result of our review of the adequacy of measures to protect federal resources and the post mining
land use, we identified that the attached list of conditions are needed to protect federal resources and
support the post mining land use of aspen management, as defined by the GMUG forest plan.
Of note is that several conditions relate to operations in an inventoried roadless area (IRA). These are
needed to satisfy direction we received to minimize entry into, and alteration of the inventoried
roadless area. As part of our review, we assessed the configuration of the proposed temporary roads in
context of consistency with lease stipulations, terrain and the need to have minimal footprint in the IRA.
We believe the proposed road locations are in satisfactory locations to minimize the effects to roadless
values.
Please contact Ryan Taylor at 970 - 527 -4131 with any questions you may have.
Sincerely,
LEVI K.
