Further <br />discussion following our February 7; 2006 letter to the Division addressed the original Kauffman <br />Pit -boundary and' acreage. <br />,x <br />It has been previously assumed that the: original Kauffman Pit, Permit Number M-78-327, permit <br />boundary included the entire site parcel of approximately 105 acres (see attached Property <br />Boundary MqM ). It;ap`e , :that -this assumption has been imintained• for many years. In 1988, <br />the l)grnit was amended 'to ;add 83 acres east of the original "property, but no reference to the <br />original permit size:br boundary has been found in the amendment materials. Teclinical revisions <br />submitted since the, permit .amendment make no reference to the permit boundary or appear to <br />assume, that the original permit included the entire 105-acre site parcel. _ <br />Despite Previous assuinPtiotns, on ginal Permit materials 'from 1978 sugg est that the original <br />permit-area include d-only?S8 acxes..However, a map illustrating the actual permit boundary has <br />not `been found in.,the permit materials.. It appears, from. further review of the original permit <br />materials,, thatthe permit boundary,'only included the post-1978 mining cells proposed at the time <br />of.the permit application'.. The area of the' proposed mining cells". is approximately 58 acres. <br />Pre-1978 mining had,oceurrecl•on the site, but it does not appear that.these "pre-law" mining <br />cells, or other areas' of the: site, were.-included in the ,permit boundary., . The pre-1978 mining <br />occurred mainly; in,'the 'southern portion of the site and the proposed post-1978 mining was to <br />occur. mainly in the•easte" 'and .'northern areas of the property.. ; <br />The,larger two groundwater lakes--currently on.the site are-remnants of the post-1978, mined out <br />cells from the original .permit:-',: The'.area of these- lakes and, surrounding shoreline is <br />approximately 58 acres,(see attached Original- 1978 Permit Boundary Map).
