Geochemistry Review 4 25 March 2011
May Day Conversion CN-1 File No M-1981-185
discontinue the test. Specific parameters of the test are shown in the table below. As the long-
term results of these humidity cell tests will have a bearing on the technical practicability of the
underground disposal option, the operator should commence the test as soon as possible. The
Division will not allow any permanent underground disposal of tailings until at least one year's
worth of data have been produced from the humidity cell test.
The following table provides the humidity test protocols for analytes and frequency of analyses.
The operator must refer to ASMT method D5744-07 for the required testing methodology. As
this is a standardized ASTM test, there are certified laboratories available that have the
capability and expertise to conduct this type of test.
Week Parameters Fre quency
19) Attachment T-5, Surface Water Sampling Results. The Applicant should make the following
revisions to the surface water sampling and monitoring plan:
1 - Add to dissolved analyte list: Aluminum, Iron
2 - Add to total recoverable analyte list:
A - Molybdenum
B - Cyanide (the WQCC regulations are in terms of free cyanide, but the operator
may analyze for WAD cyanide if they choose).
C - Total organic carbon
3 - Switch from dissolved to total recoverable: Barium, Beryllium, Boron
20) A. Attachment T-7, Mine Rock Geochemical Analysis. Please comment on the
representativeness of the rock subjected to SPLP testing, i.e., the location(s) from within the
mine the rock was collected.
B. The ANP:AGP ratio is only 1.14 to 1, and represents only one sample. Considering that this
ratio does not provide an overwhelming proportion of acid-neutralizing material, in conjunction
with the fact that data from only one sample have been provided, the Division requires more
comprehensive static testing of material that could ultimately be disturbed, exposed, and/or
stockpiled. This will begin the establishment of a data set and screening parameters for
possible future kinetic testing. Please provide a plan for more comprehensive sampling and
static testing, to be implemented subsequent to the issuance of CN-01.
