Soil Erodibility Factor "K"
This is a measure of the soil's susceptibility to erosion. It is dependent upon the soil's
resistance to detachment by rainfall and by its ability to absorb water through infiltration.
The soil erodibility factor "K", was determined from consultation of the NRCS Soil Survey
of San Miguel Area, Colorado. The disturbed area is comprised several different soil types,
and a composite of their erodibility factor was calculated for the Universal Soil Loss
Equation. Some of the soil areas and types in the NRCS survey are slightly different from
the soil types shown in the pre-mine survey shown on Map 2.04.9-1. We used the NRCS
survey for the Phase 2 release area since their soil descriptions have associated "K" values.
The reclaimed soil is primarily the same soil redistributed over the regraded areas after
mining. It is similar to the pre-mine soil and should also have the similar "K" factor.
SL-12 29MARl l.wpd 18
