E*rnMab?il
Colony Air Tracer Testing with SF6 Upstream Research
NOWENNOWENNO?
• Cylinders of SF6 are available with 115 Ibs/cylinder. Molecular weight is 146.
? Each cylinder contains 0.7877 lb-moles = 299 scf
• SF6 can be comfortably measured at 50 ppt (0.05ppb). The odor threshold for
H2S is 0.5 ppb. So, it makes sense to design a tracer test in which 0.1 ppb SF6
corresponds to 0.5 ppb H2S•
If pyrolysis gas has 4%o H2S1 then the tracer gas should have 0.8% SF6.
? Molecular weight of a 0.8% SF6 / 99.2% air mix is 29.9 (air is 28.97).
Expected pyrolysis gas molecular weight is 32-34.
• For a tracer gas flowrate of 12 kscf/day, 96 scf/day of SF6 is required
? A 115 lb cylinder of SF6 should last 3.1 days.
• Sample locations include 9-10 mine bench locations and 5-7 locations farther
away (out to property boundary).
Samples will be 8-hour time averaged samples taken 3 times daily and
analyzed on site.
? Time averaged samples may be augmented with a hand-held SF6 monitor on
the mine bench.
• Testing will include both fan-off and fan-on scenarios. Two 3-day tests will be
run to accommodate both scenarios.
