Substation B totaled 260 pounds per acre, with the perennials contributing 216 pounds to forage
production (Table 5b). Woody plant density averaged 1,059 shrubs per acre comprised mostly of
shadscale and greasewood with lesser amounts of fourwing saltbush, big sagebrush, and prickly pear
cactus scattered throughout the unit (Table 6b).
This unit passes all of the proposed revegetation success criteria except the total herbaceous
production which fell well below the standard of 558 pounds per acre due to lack of cheatgrass (Table 1).
Qualitative analysis indicates that this revegetation is in very good condition overall. This unit exhibits
good shrub establishment and diversity of forbs, shrubs, and perennial grasses.
3.18 Greasewood Reference Area
The Greasewood Reference Area was established as a new comparison area in 1999 and is located
approximately 1,500 feet northwest of the Cameo Refuse Disposal Area No. 1 along the east-facing
colluvial toe slope adjacent to the BLM Bookcliffs access road and an ephemeral drainage. Ground cover
in this area consisted of 54.3% live vegetation, 2.6% rock, 31.2% litter, and bare soil exposure of 12.0%
(Table 3a). Perennial cover across the unit averaged 16.3% (down from 19.4% in 2008) with annual and
biennial cover averaging 38.0% (down from 42.3% in 2008). The dominant taxa were cheatgrass,
greasewood, galleta, and annual wheatgrass with 35.3%, 9.0%, 2.9%, and 2.2% average cover,
respectively. Current annual production on the Greasewood Reference Area totaled 530 pounds per acre,
with the perennials contributing 132 pounds to forage production (Table 5a).
3.19 Shadscale Reference Area
The Shadscale Reference Area is located near the Roadside South Portal on the west-facing slope
(see Map 1). Ground cover in this area consisted of 50.8% live vegetation, 23.3% rock, 14.1% litter, and
bare ground exposure of 12.0% (Table 3b). Perennial cover across the unit averaged 7.1% (down from
8.3% in 2008) with annual and biennial cover averaging 43.2% (up from 36.4% in 2008). The dominant
taxa were cheatgrass, shadscale, and galleta with 41.4%, 2.6%, and 1.8% average cover, respectively.
The noxious weeds, whitetop and bindweed, were also present in the Shadscale Reference Area
contributing 0.5% ground cover. Current annual production on the Shadscale Reference Area totaled 621
pounds per acre, with the perennials contributing 94 pounds to forage production (Table 5b).
CEDAR CREEK ASSOCIATES, Inc.
