• The highest quarterly average radon concentration recorded during previous
monitoring in 2008 and 2009 was used. The highest recorded average concentration
was 120.9 pCi/L, measured from July through September 2009.
Emissions of 0.07 Ci of radon from the mine portal were calculated as shown in the
attached 2010 Radon Emission Calculation Sheet. The calculations are based on
ventilation flow rates, hours of operation, and the conservative radon concentration
described above.
Radon modeling for 2010 was conducted based on the calculated emissions, distance to
the nearest receptor, and a mean wind speed of 2.0 m/s. The effective dose equivalent to
the nearest resident calculated by COMPLY-R was 0.0039 mrem for 2010, which is
substantially below the regulatory limit of 10 mrem/year. The output print out from the
COMPLY-R program is attached.
The Whirlwind Mine is operated by Mr. Dick White, General Manager and this report
was prepared by Zach Rogers, Environmental Engineer.
"I certify under penalty of law that I have personally examined and am familiar with the
information submitted herein and based on my inquiry of those individuals immediately
responsible for obtaining the information, I believe that the submitted information is true,
accurate and complete.
