2.2.6 EP051
EP051 is comprised of approximately 32 northeastern facing acres of moderately sloping
revegetation. This unit was seeded in 2009 (using the new grassland seed mix for grazingland land use
from TR-72) and therefore, was undergoing its first growing season in 2010. An average of 12.6 plants
per square foot was observed in the unit (Compendium 6) with perennials comprising 3.9 of the 12.6
plants / ft2. Perennial seedling emergence in EP051 consisted of grasses, forbs, and shrubs with 3.4, 0.5,
and 0.04 plants per square foot, respectively. Annual seedling emergence consisted of grasses and forbs
with 0.6 and 8.1 plants per square foot, respectively.
It is Cedar Creek's observation that greater than three perennial plants per square foot is generally
considered to be "good" reclamation (3.9 were observed). However, 8.7 annual forbs per square foot
suggest that there could be some competition for survival. This scenario is not uncommon on Colowyo's
reclamation and the dominant annual forb was field pennycress (Th/aspi arvense). This species flourishes
after disturbance, but usually does not persist and present significant cover values when facing
competition from perennials (a condition normally observed in young reclamation at Colowyo). Ground
cover evaluation in accordance with Colowyo's monitoring schedule is recommended in 2011.
Cedar Creek Associates, Inc. 22 Colowyo Mine
2010 Revegetation Monitoring Report
