• INPfmD[X.TION
Wildlife baseline studies were initiated in May, 1979 at Peabody Coal
Company's Seneca II Mine located 10 miles southeast of Hayden, Routt
County, Colorado. The study area encongaassed the Seneca II Mine permit
area airl a ~ mile radius around the permit area. Elevations ranged
from 6700 to 8000 ft. The objectives of the study included:
1. Comprehensive site-specific analysis of the terrestrial comrnaiities
(i.e., major vegetation types) represented at the Seneca II Mine
with respect to vertebrate species canposition, habitat affinities,
abundance, and diversity.
2. Identification and evalretion of habitat critical to the support
of important wildlife species (i.e., "threatened" or "erriangered"
species or other vertebrates protected by state at federal law
and certain game animals) and habitat offering both envisnrnrental
• and vegetative situations which contribute to maximian wildlife
diversity for the region.
3. Provision of a wildlife data base appropriate to identifying
potential impacts on wildlife from mine development and expansion.
Included in this one~year program were field investigation of mammalian
predators, shall mils, waterfowl, passerine, game, and raptorial
birds, and big game species. The project site's importance to sport
hunters was also evaluated.
This report defines the methodology e~loyed during the course of the
study. Results are summazized in tabular form and discussed within the
text of the report. Maps delineating sampling locations within the
study area, important wildlife habitats, and distribution of important
species aze provided in Appendix A. Computes listings of raw and
analyzed wildlife data are presented in Appendix B.
•
