Game hunting and harvest data for the hunt azea in which the project •
area occurs were accessed to determine hunter use. localities receiving
irore hunting pressure within the hunt azea were deteunined from the
available data.
DATA ANALYSIS
Commuter Facilities. All quantitative data were analyzed on a CYBER
730 ocmputer. Data were entered on keypunch cards that had been double
punched and verified. Computer printouts of the raw data were generated
in the same format as the original field data sheet to expedite the data
checking process. All data were rrnrmanantly stored on magnetic tape
to facilitate subsequent data manipulations and checking of original
results. Data were analyzed using specially developed Programs and
output was generated in a format that facilitated interpretation.
Relative Abundance Indices. Estimates of population size for the different •
groups of animals surveyed in the study area are provided by relative
abundance indices. These indices aze based on percent sampling effort
(e.g., # of small malm~als per 100 trap nights) to ensure comparability
of data collected by varying sampling intensity from different vegeta-
tion types. Indices of relative abu_n~nre for data on predators obtained
faun the scenesstation visitation technique aze provided by a formula
developed by the Denver Wildlife Research Center (r.;nhar+ and KnGwlton,
1973):
TnAax Total number of visits by species X 1 000
Total number of operable station nights '
dies Diversity Index. An index to species divers%ty is provided for
certain habitat types for ~~ groups of animals. This index is based on
the Shannon-S~Veiner function frun the field of information theory
(Margalef,1957; MacArthur and MacArthur, 1961; Lloyd and Ghelazdi,1964;
Pielou,1966). As a diversity index for ~w~ity analysis, the function
describes the average degree of »n ~~ ty of predicting the species of •
a given individual picked at random from the mm~minity.
