Map Unit No. RL Rockland 5 to 65 percent slopes.
These gently to steeply sloping, sandstone/shale exposures are on
slope breaks, ledges and ridges. Slopes are broken. The native vege-
tation is very scanty with a few brush and forb species. Elevation
is 6800 to 7800 feet. The average annual air temperature is about
38° to 43°F, the average frost-free period is 70 to 90 days, and
precipitation is about 17-20 inches. Soil temperatures are in the
cryic soil zone. Individual areas of this unit are irregular in shape
and range from a few to several acres in size.
Included in mapping are small areas of shallow soils supporting
some vegetation. Topsoil salvage operations are not. recommended because
of the limiting depth to bedrock and lack of adequate, suitable topsoil
material. Because of shallow depths and rock exposures no soil,
sampling or Pedon descriptions were considered necessary for evaluation
of map unit.
-21-
