"the regional climate began to improve about 6000 •
radiocarbon years ago. Increased precipitation
permitbyd man to return to all but the driest of
the environments he had previously abandoned.
Between 6000 and 5000 B.P., he re-entered the
plains of Saskatchewan, the foothills of Montana
and Wycaning, and the mountains of central Colorado"
(Benedict and Olson, 1973, p. 326; e~hases added).
The evidence is scanty, but we might posit that SRT139 represents an
occupation of an ~anvirorrt~ntal zone that previously had been less than
hospitable and possibly unoccupied for many generations. This pattern
on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies was incident with that
recx~giiized by Benedict and. Olson on the eastern slope. Verification of
this proposition is certainly wntingent upon the recovery of additional
evidence but it does have viability.
r 1
LJ
•
56
