Palen-Indian projectile point, and a corner-notched point fragment of •
Late Prehistoric affiliations.
A total of 38 lithic artifacts was recovered from five of tY~e six exca-
vation units, during topsoil removal, or on backhoe trench backdirt
piles. This mll.ection is o~rised primarily of lithic debitage and
lesser amounts of'. stone tools. Each class of dzipped stone is discussed
below.
Bifaces. A single biface fragment was recovered from the surface of the
backdirt pile north of backlx~e trench 3 during site mapping. This biface
tip is made from a light gray chert, exhibits fine bifacial flaking with
marginal retoudz, and has a trim, lenticular profile (Fig. 9 a). One
interesting characteristic of this specimen is the potlid fracture evident
on one face. This attribute is obviously the result of heat treatment
but whether it was intentionally done, i.e. to itiq~rove its flaking
properties, or is an acca.dental byproduct following discard of a no
longer useful tool is not determinable. This fragmentary specimen is
2.2 an long, 1.5 czm wide, and 0.31 an thick.
Utilized Flakes. Flakes exhibiting wear along one or more otherwise
unmodified man~ins are classified as utilized flakes. Besides evidence
of utilization, the three utilized flakes recovered from 5KP139 are dis-
tinguishable fx+cm debitage by their larger size, the presence of cortex,
and specific manufacturing attributes such as striking platform, bulb of
percussion, and eraillure scar. All are manufactured from a beige chert.
u

Specimen 139.105 is a blade-like flake with a terminal feather fracture,
shallow bulb, and prepared platform; a minor airount of unifacial wear is
evident along one margin (Fig. 9 b). Specimen 139.101 is a triangular-
shaped fragment of a larger flake with one tapering margin; unifacial
wear is apparent along a portion of this margin (Fig. 9 c). This flake
also had a greasy or waxy luster which indicates that it has been heat-
treated. The third utilized flake, Specimen 139.103, is at least 2-3 •
42
