Materials uncovered during topsoil removal included 16 additional •
features, 11 unmcxlified lithic flakes, and 8 animal bones. The latter
wnsisted of 3 me:tapodials, 3 ribs, and a femur (2 nieces) that are
small bovid or sYieep size and are probably modern. The locations of
these bones are indicated on Map 3 but no further analysis has been
perfoaned.
The flakes were all collected by the monitoring azchaeologists from the
ground surface in the wake of the motor grader. The horizontal proveni-
en~ of these artifacts is, therefore, difficult to determine, but the
vertical dimension, Layer 1 or Layer 2, mould be determinari with a
moderate degree of accuracy. Specific descriptions of these artifacts
are further discussed under the appropriate heading within the Analysis
section.
The 16 additional features exposed during monitoring bear general simi-
larities to the features tmoovered during excavations and, as such, can •
be defined as hearths. The locations of each of these hearths, identi-
fied by the numbers 6 through 21, are indicated on P7ap 3. Characteris-
tics of these additional hearths are discussed under appropriate headings
in the Analysis section. Photos of eaciz hearth and plan view sketches of
representative examples are provided in the Appendix.
ANALYSIS
Dating. One of the primary objectives of the mitigation efforts at
SKP139 was to obtain absolute or radiometric dates for the extant cul-
tural features and, in doing so, emplace the occupation(s) of this site
within a temporal framework. The recognition during the testing opera-
tions that the features on the site were probably hearths of sane sort
made it a foregone conclusion that sufficient char~al to obtain radio-
carbon should be obtained. Since nine hearths were recogrLized during
the testing phase, the sling program determined that 10 chaz~al
samples ~.ould be adequate for radiometric determinations. •
38
