• although five units, 2 x 2 meters in size, were recormended. This
flexibility, therefore, would enable the field director to emplace
2 x 2 meters, 1 x 1 meter, 2 x 1 meters, or whatever other configura-
tion of test pit in those locales seemed appropriate.
Despite the reduction of the area of concern at SKP139 from the expan-
sive 550 meters x 450 meters to the more manageable proportions of
60 meters x 90 meters, the problan still n~mainad of deciding where to
locate the test pits so that the most infoanation wuld be gained.
Given this dileirtna, it seemed most appropriate and practical to utilize
the two backhce trenches (B.T. 1 and B.T. 4) which were dug in the area
and had exposed a number of features. Thus, four test pits or excavation
units (EU's) were established straddling the test trench and including
within their confines any feature identified by the testing operations.
Because the test trench was incoxporated within the boundaries of each
EU, the area of actual excavation varied from unit to unit according to
• the width of the trench. These EU's were numbered sequentially EU1-EU4;
a fifth 2 x 2 meter unit was reserved at the outset so that it mold be
placed judiciously dependent upon the results of the excavations of the
other four units. Eventually, two additional 1 x 2 meter units (ECTS and
EU6) were excavated. A1ans 3 and 4 shwa the general locations of all
six excavation units and Appendix: Figures 10 to 18 illustrate the
appearance of these units prior to excavation.
Before work caRnenceci in the excavation units, two stratigraphic profiles
were dug along the backhoe trenches so that the depths and c~sitions
of all natural layers mold be ascertained. Both profiles are approxi-
mately 1 meter in width and dug fran the present ground surface (PGS) to
the bottan of the test trench. Stratigraphic profile 1 was located along
the west wall of backhce trench 4, 21.5 m frrm the south end of the trench.
Stratigraphic profile 2 was placed along the south wall of backhoe trench 1,
13 m west of the juncture between backhoe trench 1 and backhoe trench 4.
These profiles determined the existence of at least three natural strata,
• the top layer distinguished into two subunits. Descriptions of ead-i layer
and subunit are provided in Table 5; Figures 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the
23
