vicinity had exposed a hearth and miscellaneous lithic •
material. It wa:o necessary to attempt to define cultural
depositions south of the road cut and Feature 11. North
of this area was exposed bedrock. The soil of the trench
was quite similar to that observed in Trench 1 -~ ilt looms
varying from darl~: gray to dark brown color. The trench did
not produce cultural material.
Feature Information
A total of 1.1 features, both surface and subsurface, were
noted at 5RT139. Limited information was retrieved about these
features during the testing program. Once backhoe trenching
had commenced in Trench 1, it was found that intact subsurface •
cultural features existed. The presence of such phenomena
and the possibility that it is associated with.a Cody Complex,
implies site significance. In accordance with procedures out-
Lined by Lennon and Wheeler (1980:4), we agree that, "The presence of
significant cultural remains on the site would make the site
significant and further proof is unnecessary. It does make
sense to continue some form of examination of subsurface
deposits in order to determine the areal extent of those
deposits..." As a result of these subsurface finds, controlled
excavation was halted with primary efforts being focused on
the trenching procedures.
•
LS
