COMMENTS
This was an aerial inspection of the Deserado Mine conducted by Jim Stark of the Colorado Division of
Reclamation,Mining and Safety. The photographs were taken on 22 February 2011 by Harry Ranney of the
Division. The mine is actively producing and shipping coal and hauling processing refuse to the refuse piles.
The weather was clear and there was snow on the ground.

-Pond DP-1 contained water but did not appear to be discharging at the time of the inspection(based on the look
of the receiving stream, Scullion Gulch). The surface of the pond was covered with ice and snow. The inslope of
the pond embankment was covered with snow,while the outslope was dry. The pond embankment appeared to be
well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted.
-Pond RP-2/3 was completely covered with snow at the time of the inspection. It did not appear as though there
was any water in the pond. The pond embankment appeared to be stable and no erosional problems were noted.
-Pond 4 was covered with snow at the time of the inspection. There did not appear to be any water in the pond.
The pond embankment appeared to be stable and no erosional problems were noted.
-Pond PP-2 contained water at the time of the inspection and was not discharging. This pond is a recycle pond for
the processing plant. The pond embankment appeared to be stable and no erosional problems were noted.
PROCESSING WASTE/COAL MINE WASTE PILES—Rule 4.10 and 4.11 Drainage Control; Surface
Stabilization; Placement:
-Deserado was hauling refuse to the RP-5a refuse pile and stockpiling it on the southwest edge. This refuse will
be stockpiled until the summer when it is warm and dry enough to be adequately spread and compacted. The pile
appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. there was a small amount of water visible on the surface of the
pile from the melting snow. This water does not appear to be a problem at this time.
-Deserado does not generally use refuse pile RP-2/3/4 during the winter. They were, however,dumping some
