Rationale for Recommendation for Approval Over Objections
Regular 112d(3) Permit Amendment Application
Climax Molybdenum Company
Climax Mine, File No. M-1977-493
On March 7, 2011, the Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety ("Division") issued its
recommendation for approval of a 112d(3) Permit Amendment Application, over objections. This
document is intended to provide a basis for the Division's recommended approval over concerns and
reasons for objection to Climax Mine Amendent-06, File M-1977-493.
The Climax Mine permit amendment application for AM-06 was found complete and considered filed
with the Division on August 24, 2010. The site is located at the top of Freemont Pass on Colorado
Highway 91. The site is located primarily in Summit County, Colorado with portions also within Park
and Eagle Counties. The proposed permit area is 7908 acres in size. This mine has been active since
1916, and permitted with the State of Colorado since the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Act went
into effect in 1977. Due to the scale of this operation, reclamation at the site occurs concurrently
wherever possible and practical. The current approved post-mined land uses for the site are
recreational, rangeland, industrial (water treatment), and developed water resource.
1.
