Colowyo Coal Company
5731 State Highway 13
Meeker, CO 81641

February 28, 2011
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
Attn: Bob Peterson
222 S. 6" St.
Grand Junction, CO 81501
RE: Colowyo Coal Company L.P. (Colowyo); Spill No. 2011-0114
Dear Mr. Peterson,
RECEIVED
2011
Colo. Dept. of Health
Grand Jct. Office
This letter is a follow up on a phone conversation reporting a spill to the Colorado
Department of Public Health and Environment on February 28, 2011, at approximately
10:35 A.M., by Mr. Tony Tennyson for the initial reporting of a spill that occurred on
February 26, 2011, at approximately 9:30 A.M.
Colowyo Coal Company experienced a spill of approximately 150 gallons of hydraulic
oil in the lower most seam of the West Pit. This spill occurred as 129 loader was
repairing a berm and an oil ring failed on the main hydraulic oil line. The machine
stopped where it was working and the area was immediately bermed off. Colowyo
maintenance department repaired the hydraulic line where the machine broke down, and
after repair to the 129 loader, it was removed from the spill location. Subsequent to the
loader removal two scarper loads of dirt were removed from the area and hauled it to our
in-pit treatment location. The spill was completely isolated due to the location deep in
the pit; nonetheless the spill did not enter any state waterways.
If you should have any additional questions please feel free to contact me at your
convenience at (970) 824-1532.
Sincerely,
Tony fenny on ?J
Environmental Engineer
Cc: C.F. 193
