to avoid all human/bear and human/mountain lion interactions.
• Common species of small mammals in the proposed facilities
area include coyote, bobcat, striped skunk, raccoon, beaver, rabbit
and a number of rodents. During the 1984 site reconnaissance, bobcat,
beaver, rabbit and kangaroo rat sign was observed on site while a gray
fox was seen in Apache Canyon. No prairie dog activity was observed
in the mine area.
A total of 122 species of birds have been reported as
breeding in the mine area. In terms of game birds, morning dove, blue
grouse, and turkey are known to occur in the area. Turkey is the
species of highest interest with a known use area being in Ciruela and
Apache Canyons. Turkeys are not known to utilize the facilities area.
Although turkeys are known to occur in areas providing brood rearing
meadows, roost trees, oakbrush, intermittent streams, and nesting
sites within the mine site area. In order to protect turkey
populations, Basin Resources will limit the amount of pesticide use
• on the mine site.
waterfowl species including shore birds, ducks and geese are
common to this area of Colorado both as migrants (during spring and
fall) and breeders. Because of existing disturbance to the ripari-
an/stream habitat, current use of the area is limited.
Eight species of raptors are listed as known inhabitants of
the area. During the 1984 site reconnaissance, only one red-tailed
hawk was observed over the area while no raptor nests were observed;
however, raptors are common breeders in this general area. Bald and
golden eagles are reported as wintering species in the general mine
area (Holder 1994).
Many other birds have the potential of being observed on
site during various times of the year. Those observed during the 1984
site reconnaissance included scrub jay, common raven, black-capped
• chickadee, starling, gray-headed junco, house sparrow, horned lark,
black-backed magpie, and rock dove.
2.04-49 (Revised O1-04-94)
