• (3) Alternative Water Supply Information <br />Results of the detailed surface and groundwater study completed by <br />Water, Waste and Land, Ltd. indicate that the mining operation at the New <br />Elk Mine will not result in contamination, diminution, or interruption of <br />unden3round or surface water sources within the permit area and adjacent <br />areas. <br />2.04.8 Climatological Information <br />The climatological information for the New Elk Mine has been taken <br />from the U.S. Department of Camierce, Trinidad and North Lake reporting <br />stations. These two locations have collected data which are representative <br />of the New Elk permit area. The Trinidad station is 6,030 feet above mean <br />sea level at latitute 37°10', longitude 104°29'. The North Lake station is <br />approximately 8,800 feet above sea level at latitude 37°13', longitude <br />• 105°03'. In addition, data from the FAA weather station located at the <br />Trinidad, Colorado Airport have been used. <br />The mean nnnthly precipitation for both the Trinidad and North <br />Lake <br />reporting stations are shown on Table 13, Climatological Data-Trinidad, and <br />Table 14, Climatological Data-North Lake. The average direction and <br />velocity of the prevailing wind is ten knots per hour fran the southwest. <br />Mean monthly temperature and temperature ranges are shown in Tables 13 and <br />14. In addition, wind data fran the Trinidad, Colorado Airport and Annual <br />Climatological Summary for 1970 are included in Exhibit 13, Climatological <br />Information. <br />2.04.9 Soils Resource Information <br />The area of the New Elk Mine surface facilities and surface <br />operations has been utilized since mining began in 1952. Mapping. and <br />sampling of the soil resources in this area was difficult to complete <br />2.09-33 <br />
