• the flume location placed in the lower canyon. Flows originating free
fractured shales and sandstone were measured between 15 and 50 gpm.
Quality ranged from 504 to 583 conductivity and 6.5 to 8.7 pH. Current use
is livestock and wildlife watering and for aesthetics as the flow creates a
stream running through the ranchette development in the canyon. These
springs are a valuable contribution to surface flow making Santistevan
Canyon a perennial stream.
Surface Water Monitoring
WFC has been gathering stream flow and water quality baseline data
from Santistevan, Apache and Ciruela Canyons since February 1984. This
data has been gathered as per the requirements of permit stipulations and
is presented in Exhibit 12, Annual Hydrology Report.
During the spring of 1984, flume stations were constructed and
Stevens Type F continuous recorders were calibrated and placed in operation
. on Apache and Santistevan Canyons on April 5 and 20, respectively. These
stations were maintained for a period of 14 months until sufficient data
was collected to differentiate seasonal flow variations. Also, Ciruela
Canyon stream flow has been monitored quarterly at two surface stations,
one above the Golden Eagle Mine and one at the confluence with the
Purgatoire River below the Golden Eagle Mine. All data collected from the
3 canyons is summarized below.
Santistevan Canyon. Santistevan Canyon is a perennial stream.
Flows ranged from 0.014 to greater than 30.4 cfs with an average 24 hour
mean of 0.096 cfs. Exhibit 12, Annual Hydrology Report, presents the daily
record at mean 24 hour and peak discharges recorded during the year while
the hydrograph summarizes the mean 24 hour variations. Runoff calculations
indicate an annual discharge of 148 acre-f t. T'he majority of this runoff
was recorded during the summer months in the form of heavy localized
thunderstorms. These stones produced extreme spikes in the hydrograph, two
of which exceed the recording limits of the flume station. A relatively

2.04-31
