originate fran sandstone and loose sandy material. Santistevan Canyon has • <br />at least three springs whose access for sampling is restricted, WFC <br />monitored the flows and water quality of these springs at the flume <br />location in lower Santistevan Canyon. <br />Seeps originate fran coal and shale rather than sandstone. <br />Sandstones in the area have a vez}+ low penneability. The coal seams which <br />seep are not the seams mined by WF'C. These seams are upper coal seams that <br />crop at elevations between 7200 and 7800 feet. The primary use of seeps is <br />either livestock or wildlife watering. Parras Canyon and Santistevan <br />Canyon streams flow, at least in part, due to springs or seepage. No seeps <br />encountered are used for irrigation or domestic water supplies. <br />With the preliminary spring and seep survey conducted in February <br />and field verification and sampling in May, WFC initiated a monitoring <br />program of the springs and seeps within a one mile area of the New Elk and <br />Golden Eagle Mine permit boundaries. Of the 22 springs and seeps • <br />identified in February, 9 fell within this area and were verified in May. <br />These 9 locations were monitored during the 1984 growing season (May <br />through October) and August 1985. An assessment of the significance of the <br />springs and seeps on surface flows, irrigation practices, livestock <br />watering, wildlife watering and domestic use was made. Additional <br />monitoring of Springs and seeps will be conducted annually during the month <br />of August. <br />During the monitoring period each location was visited on a <br />monthly basis. During each visit, measurements of pH, conductivity and <br />temperature were made using a Hydro Lab Model 4000 field sampling kit. <br />Flow of each spring and seep was visually estimated. <br />Results of the inventory and locations of the springs and seeps <br />are presented in Table 12, Results of Spring and Seep Inventory, and Map 8, <br />Regional Hydrology. Data for each location monitored is presented in <br />Tables 2 through 10 of Exhibit 12, Annual Hydrology Report and discussed . <br />below. <br />2.04-28 <br />
