qualifier. In soils with a higher pH (as are found in the PSCM region), .
a more appropriate standard would be 10 mg/l (EPA, 1976). This year,
none of the PSCM alluvial wells displayed a value higher than 4.00 mg/1,
and no spoil wells displayed a value higher than 4.52 mg/l.
Wadge Underburden Well 11 exceeded the selenium standard, 20 ug/1, with
a value of 21.5 ug/l. This value is an anomaly; the highest previous
value was 6.6 ug/l (in 2007). The selenium value from PSCM's GWPOC well
in the Grassy Creek basin was less than the standard (see below).
Overburden Well COV2633 exceeded the zinc standard, 2 mg/1, with a value
of 3.8 mg/1. This value is and anomaly; the highest previous value was
0.15 mg/l. The zinc value from PSCM's GWPOC well in the Grassy Creek
basin was less than the standard (see below).
Finally, water quality analyses performed on the sample obtained at the
PSCM shop well (STC5) for this year were compared against both human
health (mandatory) and secondary (i.e., recommended but not mandatory)
drinking water standards developed for ground water by the CDPHE. No
human health standards were exceeded. The CDPHE secondary standard for
sulfate, 250 mg/1, was exceeded with a value of 430 mg/1. Well STC5 has
historically exhibited sulfate concentrations higher than the secondary
drinking water standard for this parameter. The CDPHE secondary standard
for iron, 0.3 mg/1, was exceeded with a value of 0.44 mg/1. Well STC5
has occasionally exhibited concentrations higher than the secondary
drinking water standard for this parameter. However, bottled water is
consumed at the PSCM.
Ground Water Points of Compliance
A GWPOC have been established for the PSCM (PSCM PAP page 2.04-103,
Vol.l). Attachment 7-3 of the Seneca II PAP provides the details of how
the standards were established. The ground water standards for Grassy
Creek Alluvial Well SGAL70 are provided in this AHR on Table 7. No
exceedances of those standards were observed on samples collected from
this well this year.
8
