I imagine the mining will take place on the Travessilla-Rock outcrop unit which is
made up of sandstone outcrops and soils derived from the sandstone parent material.
A reclamation plan was not included in the material I received.
Vegetation consists of blue grama, western wheatgrass, sideoats grama, needlegrass,
pinon pine and junipers. I was told this area was previously mined and at that time the
reclamation plan was to leave the site as exposed bedrock as that made up most of the area to
begin with and that is the intention with this permit application.
Present and post mining use of the site is rangeland which is a suitable land use for the
site. Proposed mining activity will be to maintain the existing slopes by working up and down
the slope evenly. There is little danger of increased erosion if this is followed as the runoff
factor should not change due to the exposed bedrock on the site, nor will the activity cause a
change in direction of flow.
My only concern is the potential in this area for the occurrence of noxious weeds. Within
a short distance of the site, JR Phillips, Fremont County Weed Manager, has identified hoary
cress, Russian knapweed, Russian olive and tamarisk, all noxious weeds. I would recommend
that contact be made with the Fremont County Weed Advisory Board for a check of the site and
subsequent weed control plans if noxious weeds are found on site.
Sincerely,
Rick Romano
District Conservationist
Canon City Field Office
cc: Joan Adair, President, Fremont Conservation District
attachments: Soil reports
Helping People Help the Land
An Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
