population numbers seem to have stabilized. The Williams Fork irrigation ditch remains open and usable
following beaver control efforts in 2006.
Spot and area spraying efforts were expanded for noxious weeds in 2010, as part of an ongoing weed
control program, to address an increase in weed occurrences due to climatic factors. Spraying was
completed by BTUEC Mine Environmental Staff, and Peabody reclamation personnel. Primary targeted
weed species included Russian knapweed, hoary cress (white-top), Canadian thistle, and tamarisk.
Selective herbicide applications utilized 2,4-D, Tordon, Escort, and triclopyr (tamarisk). Spraying was
conducted from June through October, and covered a total of approximately 245.7 acres.
Areas treated included, but were not limited to:
- Roadsides (main entry road, roads on the plateau area north and west of the road leading to the
7-North Angle Well, and portions of the main entry roads in both the east and west mine
facilities areas)
- Refuse Pile area
- No. 9 Mine Shop area
- Areas in and surrounding the west Mine Facilities area (i.e. Water Treatment Ponds,
Office/Warehouse, Bathhouse, Coal Handling Facilities, Railroad Spur, Wastewater Treatment
areas, and yard areas)
- The open meadow to the north of the reclaimed Mine No. 4 portals
- The southern portion of the reclaimed Williams Fork Strip Pit
- Mine substations (Glystar)
Limited tamarisk control efforts (spot treatment - not shown on map) focused on areas south and east of
the end of the rail-spur and isolated occurrences along the main access road and in areas adjacent to the
Williams Fork River. BTUEC contracted with a local rancher (John Raftopoulis) to hay several areas
including the Williams Fork bottom, the plateau area south of the 7-North Angle Well, and the hillside to
the east and south of the old highway.
Attached are copies of the standard form (CDRMS) Annual Reclamation Report for 2010, and 2010
Annual Reclamation Report Map. Please note that this report incorporates a number of minor changes
and updates resulting from the Division's review of the 2009 ARR.
